Welcome to My Practice
Regular dental cleanings and exams are the cornerstone of good oral health. Great hygiene dramatically reduces the risk of all sorts of invasive — and expensive — dental problems down the road.
As a former practicing Dental Hygienist while earning my DDS, I have a huge appreciation for the power of preventative care. Whether you're due for your scheduled cleaning, or a little (or a lot) overdue, I'm excited to work with you.
Just one click to a cleaner, brighter smile!
The Power of Preventative Care
Here’s the truth I learned long before I earned my DDS, back when I was working chairside as a Dental Hygienist: almost every expensive, invasive dental problem starts as a small one that nobody caught in time. A cavity becomes a root canal. A little gum inflammation becomes periodontal disease. A routine visit becomes an emergency.
Preventative care is how we change that story. A cleaning and exam every six months does two things at once:
- It removes what you can’t. Even with great brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar in spots a toothbrush can’t reach. Clearing it keeps decay and bad breath at bay.
- It catches problems while they’re still small. Your exam is a checkpoint — for decay, gum health, bite issues, and even oral cancer screening — when treatment is simplest and least costly.
My goal at every visit is the same: keep your mouth healthy enough that you only think about your teeth while you’re brushing them. Whether you’re on schedule or long overdue, there’s no judgment here — just a gentle team and a clear plan to get you back on track.
What to Expect at a Dental Cleaning Appointment
Before your cleaning, a thorough exam checks for cavities (a.k.a. dental caries, or tooth decay).
Dental X-rays are taken on average once a year. They help check for decay between the teeth or below the gum-line where we can't see, and help evaluate bone health.
Dr. Hain will show you what she finds using X-rays or an intra-oral camera, so you can be confident in the diagnosis. She'll provide treatment options and help you choose the best one for your needs.
The exam also screens for less common issues, such as tongue or throat cancers.
A periodontal exam (a.k.a. perio or gum exam) checks your gums for periodontal disease. A dental probe measures the depth of the pocket between each tooth and the gum below the gum-line.
Healthy gums have shallower pockets, which keeps plaque from building up under the gums. Each tooth is checked to build a complete picture.
Based on the findings, Dr. Hain may recommend anything from carrying on as you have been, to focusing your brushing and flossing in particular spots, to a deep cleaning when needed.
Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces. Special instruments clear the buildup that brushing and flossing leave behind.
The bacteria in plaque accelerate tooth decay and contribute to bad breath. Some buildup is normal even with great daily care, which is why regular visits matter.
For healthy mouths this is quick and easy. When gum disease is present, a deep cleaning — scaling and root planing — removes plaque below the gum-line all the way to the roots. Deep cleanings involve numbing the area and may take more than one visit.
As an accomplished Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Hain is happy to discuss any enhancements you'd like to make to your smile — a chipped tooth, straightening with Invisalign, veneers, implants, or whitening.

Teeth Cleaning Frequently Asked Questions
A general guideline is a professional cleaning every six months, though patients with specific conditions or a history of gum disease may benefit from more frequent visits.
Regular cleanings prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease and keeping your smile bright.
Cleanings are typically not painful. You may notice mild sensitivity if you have sensitive teeth or gum inflammation, but it's usually quite tolerable.
If you're concerned about discomfort, let Dr. Hain know and we'll take extra steps to keep you comfortable throughout.
A typical cleaning appointment takes about an hour. A routine cleaning for someone with good oral health is quicker; a deep cleaning or extensive tartar removal may take longer. We'll give you a more accurate estimate when you schedule.
Yes. Dr. Hain is skilled at working with nervous and special-needs patients and will help determine the right option for your situation. See our other services for related care.
A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) is preventive — removing plaque, tartar, and surface stains to maintain good oral health.
A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) treats gum disease, removing plaque and tartar above and below the gum-line and smoothing the roots to halt its progression.
Often, yes. Many surface stains from coffee, tea, tobacco, and certain foods can be removed during a cleaning, leaving teeth cleaner and brighter. More stubborn, deep-set stains may need a whitening treatment — we're happy to discuss your options.
Yes — and they're an essential part of oral health during pregnancy, since hormonal changes can increase the risk of gum problems. Let our team know you're pregnant so we can take the right precautions. Some X-rays may be postponed, but routine cleanings are safe and recommended.
