In pain right now? Call us — we'll get you in today.
Is This a Dental Emergency?
Some emergencies are obvious. Others are easy to second-guess until they get worse. As a rule of thumb: if you don't think you can comfortably wait a few days to have it looked at, call us.
Common dental emergencies include:
- A broken, fractured, or knocked-out tooth
- A sharp or sudden toothache
- Swelling, an abscess, or signs of infection
- A lost or loose filling or crown
- A denture that's broken or no longer fits
- An object stuck between teeth that floss won't remove
Even a problem with no pain — or a purely cosmetic one before a big event — can count as an emergency in the right circumstances. When in doubt, it's better to err on the side of caution. We're happy to advise you over the phone.
If you believe your emergency may be life-threatening, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
Don’t Wait It Out — Call Us
A dental emergency has a way of taking over everything else. The throbbing tooth you can’t stop thinking about, the chipped front tooth you’re suddenly self-conscious about, the crown that came loose right before a trip — it’s stressful, and it rarely improves on its own.
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to white-knuckle it until you can “find a dentist who’ll see you.” As an emergency dentist, I keep space open in my schedule every single day for exactly these situations, so we can usually see you within hours of your call. We’ll get you out of pain first, then sort out the lasting fix together.
If you’re dealing with something right now, call the office — the sooner we hear from you, the sooner we can help.
If you believe your dental emergency may be life-threatening, please call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room immediately.
What to Do Right Now
Time matters most here — aim to be seen within the hour for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Handle it by the crown, not the root — pick up the white part you normally see, and avoid touching the pointed end.
Rinse gently, don't scrub. If it's dirty, rinse briefly with milk or saline. Skip soap, chemicals, and tap water.
Try to reseat it. If you can, slip the tooth back into its socket facing the right way and bite gently on a clean cloth. Don't force it.
Otherwise, keep it moist. Store it in milk or your own saliva (or a tooth-preservation kit) on your way in.
Call us immediately and head over. A cold compress on the outside of the mouth helps with pain and swelling en route.
A toothache bad enough to disrupt your day is a clear sign something needs attention now — common causes include decay, a fracture, gum disease, or an abscess.
Rinse with warm water and gently floss around the tooth to clear any trapped debris. Over-the-counter pain medication can take the edge off until you're seen.
Even if it eases up, don't ignore it — pain that comes and goes often means the problem is still progressing. Call us and we'll figure out the cause, get you short-term relief that day, and plan the long-term fix.
A chip isn't always an immediate emergency, but it's best not to wait long — small cracks can turn into bigger, more painful problems if left untreated.
Save any pieces if you can and bring them with you. Rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress to control swelling.
Call us so we can gauge the damage and get you in. We'll tell you whether it needs same-day care or can be scheduled soon.
An abscess is an infection inside or around a tooth — your body produces pus as it fights it, which causes pain and swelling in the gums, cheek, or face.
This is serious: untreated, the infection can spread through the jaw, neck, and head. Don't wait it out.
Call the office promptly. Treatment usually means draining the infection to relieve swelling, addressing the source (often a root canal or extraction), and antibiotics — followed by a plan to protect your health going forward.
Losing a filling or crown exposes sensitive tooth tissue and is often uncomfortable enough to need prompt attention.
If you can find the crown, bring it with you — if it and the tooth are in good shape, we can often reseat it the same day. A lost filling can usually be replaced at that visit too.
Emergency Dentistry Frequently Asked Questions
A dental emergency is any sudden, severe issue that needs prompt attention to relieve pain, prevent further damage, or address a potentially dangerous infection. Severe toothaches, knocked-out or broken teeth, abscesses, uncontrolled bleeding, objects stuck between teeth, and injuries to the gums or soft tissue all qualify.
If a situation is causing significant pain, swelling, or bleeding — or you're simply not sure — contact our office and we'll help you decide. If you believe it may be life-threatening, call 911 or go to an emergency room.
Our primary focus is same-day emergency care during business hours, and we hold time open every day for it. For after-hours and weekend situations, we handle cases individually — contact the practice and our team will guide you on the right next step for your situation.
It's generally best not to wait long. Even a minor-looking chip can lead to more serious problems if left untreated. Call us promptly — we'll assess the extent of the damage and recommend whether it needs same-day care or can be scheduled soon.
A simple kit can help you manage things until you're seen: gauze or cotton balls to control bleeding, dental wax for sharp edges, over-the-counter pain medication, a small mirror, dental floss, saline solution, a small lidded container (useful for a knocked-out tooth), disposable gloves, and our office number. It's a stopgap, not a substitute for professional care — still call us promptly.
It depends on the situation, but it generally follows three steps. Evaluate: we assess the problem and identify both temporary and permanent options. Plan: we agree together on an approach that covers immediate relief and a long-term fix. Treat: we take the first steps that day — you won't leave without relief, even if the permanent solution needs a follow-up.
